About Aftab

Heritage meets contemporary art today

Art that remembers the hand that made it, and carries it into new homes.

AFTAB is a contemporary cultural brand rooted in Uzbekistan. Samarkand is where it first takes form: a city of courtyards, bazaars and blue domes, where craft has been passed from one generation to the next for centuries.

From Samarkand to Khiva, from Bukhara to Fergana, the collection grows one studio at a time: original works, each one signed and each one single.

Samarkand, capital of an empire

Under Timur and the Timurids the city becomes a crossroads of the Silk Road: turquoise domes, glazed tile and a new visual language for the whole region.

Tile, ornament, light

Madrasas rise around the Registan. Geometry and colour turn architecture into a canvas that painters and craftsmen will study for centuries.

The Silk Road on canvas

Travelling painters discover the bazaars, courtyards and faces of Turkestan. Merchants, weavers and caravans enter the picture.

A new language

Artists in Tashkent and Samarkand join the colour of Central Asia to modern form. Studios, schools and exhibitions grow around them.
